What is Public Liability Insurance?

What is Public Liability Insurance?

It's an insurance policy designed to protect you and your business from insurance claims made by the public. It’s recommended for anyone that has any interaction with the public during their work. Public liability also covers you against damage to other people’s property, or injuring a member of the public as a result of your business.

Products Liability (often part of Public Liability insurance), covers you if you refurbish, or repackage products you sell or supply. It can also extend to cover Employers Liability insurance, which is a legal requirement for any business that has employees.

What does Public Liability not cover?

Public liability is not meant to cover your own property or injury to yourself. It’s designed to cover damage to third parties only.

If you are a sole trader or you work for yourself, then injuries you sustain will need to be covered by a separate Personal Accident Insurance policy.

Damage or theft or your own tools, your stock, or your other contents is also not covered. However, this cover can be added as an extension on your policy.

Do you have employees?

If you have employees, it’s a legal requirement to have this insurance. It’s provided as part of a Public Liability product and covers claims made by employees. Find out more about Employers Liability.
